Question:
My 3-year-old daughter has been blinking her eyes more than normal for about two months now. What could it be?
Answer:
Excessive blinking in a 3-year-old may have many causes. Light sensitivity from iritis, or internal ocular inflammation, is possible. Allergies can cause itching which is relieved by blinking. A common cause of forceful blinking of both eyes in children is simple motor tic. Tics are made worse with fatigue and anxiety. Rarely it may be a sign of a seizure disorder. Consult with your pediatrician, and if advised see an ophthalmologist.
