I am 57 years old and have been using reading glasses for computer work, reading books, etc. Would laser refractive eye surgery fix this?

Answer:
Yes and no. Yes, the laser refractive surgery (LASIK and PRK) can focus both eyes at near; however, you would still need glasses to focus at distance. Generally, laser refractive surgery either improves one's distance vision OR near vision, but not both. Typically, patients will chose to focus both eyes at distance and wear glasses to focus for near activities (reading and computer). If you want to focus at near and far, then there is an alternative where the surgery can treat your dominant eye to focus at distance and the non-dominant eye to focus at near, which is called monovision. This option is most ideal for people who have in the past tried this option. One suggestion could be to try contact lenses to simulate monovision and if successful, then try the monovision laser refractive surgery to achieve focusing ability at distance and near.
