My first annual meeting—Dallas in 2000. I was a research fellow and was so excited to present a poster at such a large meeting.

Best tip for making the most of the AAO meeting—plan ahead. Check with your colleagues and/or friends to find out who is attending so that you can reconnect. For the most efficient use of your time, you will need an itinerary, so review the meeting scheduleand don’t forget to set time aside for breaks and the exhibit floor.

What do on the exhibit floor—ask about promotions and try before you buy. Companies showcase their latest and/or best technology and equipment during the meeting, and they may also offer meeting-special promotions. There is plenty of opportunity to test the equipment and devices on the exhibit floor prior to purchase. Take advantage of having the largest selection of ophthalmic products to review all in one place.

Biggest beginner’s mistake—stillettos! Either wear flats or have back-up flats. Expect to walk more than you normally would during a meeting. Due to the size of attendance, Academy meetings are held at large convention centers.

Guilty pleasure at the annual meeting—enjoying receptions and dinners. There are always many events at some of the best venues and restaurants in the city!
