  • Our staff and our members share a common purpose: to advance the highest standards of comprehensive eye care and protect patients’ vision through life.

The Academy functions as a group of colleagues working together toward a common goal. As colleagues, we respect each other’s contributions and treat each other as peers. Management has an open-door policy, and we actively seek ideas from all staff on how we can improve our activities.

We’re large enough to have a wide range of functions at the Academy, but small enough that we can recognize each other in the halls. That sense of collegiality contributes to a high level of job satisfaction. About half of our employees have been here for five years to twenty years.

The Academy intends to provide benefits that are competitive with for-profit as well as non-profit organizations in the San Francisco Bay Area. We offer a variety of program choices in the compensation areas that are most important to our employees.

    Health and Wellness

The Academy offers a range of medical plan options. Employees may choose medical services through a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) or a Health Maintenance Organization (HMO). The Academy also offers a dental care plan. Employees may also choose to enroll their spouses or domestic partner and dependents in any of these plans.

    Retirement

The Academy provides a safe harbor non-elective contribution equivalent to 3% of eligible compensation and matches an employee's pre-tax contribution dollar-for-dollar up to 3% of eligible earnings. In addition, the Academy makes a discretionary contribution equal to 4% of an employee's eligible earnings to their 401(k) account each year.

    Flexible Spending Accounts Pre-tax Programs

With this Plan, employees are able to set aside pre-tax dollars in Flexible Spending accounts, for non-reimbursed medical expenses and for dependent care.

Commuter Check and Parking Pre-tax Programs

Employees may set aside pre-tax dollars to purchase Commuter Checks for public transit or pay for monthly parking at the Ophthalmology Garage or other local participating garages.

    Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

This program is designed to assist an employee and/or their eligible dependents in resolving life problems or concerns.

    Career Development

It is our goal to provide encouragement, assistance and opportunities for development of employees professionally.
    Additional benefit opportunities include:

    Time to Recharge

Because we believe that employees need time away from work for rest and relaxation, the Academy provides its employees vacation time and a personal choice holiday each year. In addition, the Academy observes 10 holidays a year.

    Sick Leave

Because we believe in the long-term health and workplace productivity of our employees, the Academy provides its employees paid sick leave which can be taken during periods of sickness, to recuperate after illness or injury, to attend doctor’s appointments, or to care for family members. If an employee becomes seriously ill, the Academy's short-term disability and long-term disability benefits provide financial stability.

    Life Insurance and AD&D

The Academy offers, at no cost to a regular full time employee, Basic Life Insurance and Accidental Death and Dismemberment coverage.

    Length of Service Award

We know that opportunities abound in the marketplace and appreciate Academy staff’s desire to contribute to our success on an ongoing basis. In acknowledgment of that contribution, the Academy provides recognition for every 5 years of service.

    Employee Referral Bonus

The Academy will pay a referral bonus (subject to deductions) to employees whose referrals result in a full-time or part-time regular hire.
