  • Modifier for Injection Performed During Global Period

During the global period where the injection is performed for a diagnosis that differs from the surgery, is modifier -58 or -79 appropriate?

    Answer:
If the diagnosis is completely unrelated to the reason for the surgery, then modifier -79 is correct. Just because there is a different diagnosis, this does not necessarily mean it is unrelated.

If it is related and considered therapy following the major surgery, report modifier -58.

See the modifier reference guides provided on the Coding Resources by Topic webpage.

If you missed the virtual course, you can purchase the recording through Nov. 20.
