  • What are the bright, wavy lines that were in my vision for a half-hour?

    Question:

This morning while working on my computer, I was having bright wavy lines fluctuating in my vision. I couldn't read or focus at distances. After 30 minutes it went away. Any idea what might be going on?

    Answer:

Your symptoms sound suspicious for an ophthalmic migraine (migraine without a headache). An ophthalmic migraine often includes zigzag lines, colored lights or flashes of lights expanding to one side of your vision over 10 to 30 minutes. The flashing lights often take on a herringbone pattern and are located in both eyes in the same field of gaze (as opposed to one eye only). While what you describe is not likely to be a sign of a more serious problem, a comprehensive eye exam and a discussion with your primary doctor is recommended.
