Can amniotic membrane be used for dry eye?

Question:
Can amniotic membrane treatment be used for dry eye after you've had cataract surgery? I had cataract surgery several years ago and now have debilitating dry eyes. Both over-the-counter and prescription medication don't help and I’m also very light sensitive.
Answer:
Yes. Amniotic membrane graft (using transplanted tissue to repair or heal surface of eye) is a treatment for severe dry eyes. Having had cataract surgery before does not change the treatment options available to you. You should discuss with your ophthalmologist whether this is the right treatment for you.
