Does a scleral buckle operation involve the optic nerve?

Question:
Does a scleral buckle operation involve the optic nerve? I have a pinpoint retinal hole and I am very worried about whether my optic nerve may be damaged.
Answer:
A scleral buckle operation does not involve the optic nerve. However, a pinpoint retinal hole should not be treated with a scleral buckle unless it has caused a retinal detachment. In the absence of a retinal detachment, the treatment for a retinal hole is either laser treatment or observation.
