Question:
If my 3-year-old son has to wear glasses for strabismus (crossed eyes), should his eyes still cross when he is wearing them?
Answer:
One of the very first things the ophthalmologist will do is check for farsightedness by doing a vision test with drops. When the glasses are worn the crossing should be better. However, the crossing will remain when the glasses are not worn. If you are noting the crossing remains with the glasses on, then I would recommend another exam to see if there is more farsightedness. This does occur frequently. If there is no more correction that can be recommended, eye muscle surgery is often recommended to reduce the crossing seen when the glasses are worn.
