  • Is it normal for hair to grow outward from the lacrimal caruncle?

    Question:
Is it normal for hair to grow outward from the lacrimal caruncle?

My infant daughter frequently has hairs sticking out of the inner corners of her eyes. Even after brushing away or gently plucking them out, the apparent eyelashes seem to come back within a couple weeks. Can it affect her vision or overall health now or down the road?

    Answer:
It can be quite normal to have hairs in the caruncle as well as glands. If the lashes do not appear to bother your daughter, leave them be. Your ophthalmologist can check her eyes to see if the hairs are touching her cornea, which can harm the eye and lead to infection.
