Should I have my eyes checked after each ocular migraine?

Question:
Should I have my eyes evaluated each time I experience an ocular migraine?
My symptoms often include zigzag lines, colored lights, or flashes of lights on one side or both sides of my vision. It happened 5 months ago and I had a complete eye exam and all was ruled out and concluded to be due to an ophthalmic migraine.
Answer:
If your symptoms are identical, it is not necessary to undergo an evaluation each time you experience an ophthalmic migraine. However, if your signs and symptoms change (i.e., flashing lights in one eye only, a shadow or shade that does not move or disappear, etc.), an urgent evaluation is required as these signs may be those of a retinal tear or detachment.
