• What is the typical expected recovery time after having tear duct stents inserted?

    Question:

I have blocked tear ducts after chemo/taxotere/radiation (treatment for cancer). What is the typical expected recovery time after having tear duct stents inserted?

    Answer:

There is a known association between the use of taxotere and blocked tear ducts (when the eye's drainage system for tears is blocked). Depending how severe the obstruction is, stent placement (when a tiny tube is placed in drainage system to help open up the blockage) or other similar procedures may be recommended. These procedures are outpatient (not admitted to the hospital). The recovery time is a bit of swelling and bruising for five to seven days. You can drive the next day, but no heavy lifting or strenuous exercise for one week. Please discuss your options with your oculoplastic surgeon.
