• Vision Problems After Airbag Opened in Auto Accident

    Question:

I was in an auto accident and the airbag deployed in my face. Since then my near and far vision has been blurred. I purchased new prescription glasses just prior to the accident, however, but they no longer properly correct my vision. Can a severe blow like this cause cataracts and astigmatism to increase?

    Answer:

Airbag injuries can cause visual loss in many ways. There could be a direct eye injury at the time of the accident such as a corneal abrasion, rupture of the eyeball, or nerve or retinal damage. This would be noticed at the time of injury or shortly afterward.  If your vision decrease occurred several days or longer after the accident, then it certainly could be a late complication such as traumatic cataract, retinal detachment, or other problems.
