What are the odds of getting halos or star bursts from multifocal IOLs?

Question:
I am trying to decide whether to go with monofocal IOLs or multifocal IOLs. Is there any way to assess the odds of getting halos or star bursts which do not resolve? Is there any significant difference between brands of multifocal lenses in terms of halo or star bursts which do not resolve?
Answer:
There is no specific test to assess the risk of halos, as every patient notices some halo/glare after the surgery. For most, this will decrease over the first three months. Some surgeons feel that certain corneal abnormalities found on measurements taken before the surgery can lead to more halo/glare after surgery but this is not absolute. Ask your surgeon about this. I would have your surgeon check this and all other pre-operative measurements to see if multifocal IOLs are a good option for you. Some doctors feel that certain multifocal lenses perform better than others. Ask your ophthalmologist what might work best for you.
