Why has my pink eye not gone away completely?
FEB 21, 2016
Question:
I have conjunctivitis (an eye infection, also called pink eye) and my physician prescribed polymyxin B sulfate and trimethoprim ophthalmic solution, which I take every 4 hours. I have been taking it for six days now but it doesn’t seem to get any better. The discharge has reduced but not stopped completely. The eyes still look very red and irritated. I do not wear contact lenses. Could this be something serious?
Answer:
Some types of conjunctivitis can take longer to resolve. It doesn't sound like it is something more serious such as a corneal disease or other type of inflammation in the eye. However if your vision is decreased or if your symptoms continue much longer, a follow-up exam with an ophthalmologist is needed.
