• Why is near vision blurry after dilation?

    Question:

I recently had my pupils dilated for the first time. While I expected light sensitivity and brought sunglasses, I did not expect extremely blurry near vision afterwards. Does this result from having too much light hitting your retinas? I can’t find the physiological reasons behind it after searching online.

    Answer:
Blurry near vision after pupillary dilation with eye drops is most likely associated with temporary paralysis of the focusing muscle inside the eye (ciliary muscle). The duration of the blur depends on the drug used. Another reason could be that pupil dilation reduces the depth of field just like a photograph with a blurred background behind the subject.
