  • 7th Final Character for Fractures

Question: For injury and trauma ICD-10 codes, we often use a seventh final character A, D or S. Are these still appropriate for orbital floor fractures?

Answer: Fracture ICD-10 codes differ from the other codes. In addition to initial or subsequent status, they require the type and status of fracture in the seventh position.

A - Initial encounter for closed fracture
B - Initial encounter for open fracture
D - Subsequent encounter for fracture with routine healing
G - Subsequent encounter for fracture with delayed healing
K - Subsequent encounter for fracture with nonunion
    S - Sequela
