  • How to Bill Post-Operative Visits for Noncovered Surgery

If a patient has surgery but the claim is denied and must be written off because staff failed to obtain precertification, can follow-up visits be filed to the patient's insurance?

    Answer:
The visits that would be considered post-op visits should not be charged to the patient or insurance. The practice error applies to the surgery and the global period. The insurer has a record of the surgery, (denied claim) and if you get an audit visit during the global period, it could determine they were related.
