Can cold weather and soap break plastic frames?
FEB 14, 2022
Question:
My plastic frames broke at the bridge. I’ve been cleaning them with dish soap. Is this too harsh? I was also outdoors in zero to ten degree weather and wondered if extreme cold along with the dish soap may have contributed to their demise.
Answer:
Different materials react differently to environmental changes and cleaning agents. I would imagine dish soap should not be harmful to solid plastic frames. However, if the material is cheap or of poor quality it may be adversely affected. Very cold weather can make solids more brittle allowing them to break more easily, but I doubt this would be an issue with high quality frames. I suggest if they were purchased recently you can ask about a warranty or at least some sort of discount on replacement.
