    2018 Performance Year: Key Dates for CMS, IRIS Registry, and ABO

    2017
    Nov. 16 2018 MIPS rules published in Federal Register.
    Dec. 31 Deadline to form a virtual group for the 2018 MIPS performance year.
    2018
    Jan. 1 2018 MIPS performance year starts.
    Spring CMS notifies clinicians if they are exempt from MIPS.
    CMS notifies practices whether they have been designated a small practice.
    June 1 Deadline for new users to sign agreements for IRIS Registry/EHR integration, which enables automated reporting of quality data.
    Aug. 1 Deadline for integrating your EHR system with the IRIS Registry for automated reporting of 2018 quality data.
    Late August Expected start date for submitting promoting interoperability (formerly ACI) hardship applications, which you can do online.
    Aug. 31 Deadline for submitting your improvement plan to the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO) for the MOC Part IV improvement activity (see Get Credit for MIPS and MOC).
    Oct. 1 Promoting interoperability (formerly ACI) measures and improvement activities have a minimum performance period of 90 days. (The Academy urges you to start much earlier.)
    Nov. 7 Deadline for new users of the IRIS Registry to sign agreements to use the its web portal for attesting to improvement activities, for attesting to promoting interoperability (formerly ACI) measures, and for manual reporting of quality measures.* (Note: After EyeNet's MIPS manual went to press, this deadline was changed from Oct. 31 to Nov. 7.)
    Dec. 31 Last day to apply for promoting interoperability (formerly ACI) hardship.
    Last day to apply to have performance categories reweighted due to extreme and uncontrollable circumstances.
    End of 2018 performance year.
    2019
    Jan. 15 Deadline to submit your 2018 IRIS Registry data release consent form.
    March 1 Last day for CMS to process claims from 2018 for claims-based reporting.
    March 31 Last day to submit 2018 MIPS data if reporting directly to the CMS attestation portal.
    Dec. 1 CMS must notify MIPS participants of their 2020 payment adjustment factor at least 30 days before the 2020 payment year.
    2020
    Jan. 1 Your Medicare Part B reimbursements will be adjusted up or down based on your 2018 MIPS performance.
    *If you already signed up for IRIS Registry/EHR integration, you don’t have to sign up separately to use the web portal for attestation.
