Diagnosis Selection When Multiple Cataracts
Question: The surgeon’s documentation lists mature/posterior subcapsular cataract (PSC) for the cataract. How would you recommend coding this? As a mature cataract or a PSC?
Answer: Technically both ICD-10 codes can be reported.
Additional questions are:
- Are you submitting CPT code 66982 for complex surgery?
- Was dye used for better visualization of the mature lens?
- Who is the payer? Although Medicare recognizes the use of dye for the mature lens, many commercial plans do not. Always best to check each payers’ policy.
