  • How YOs Can Start an International Career

Have you ever been interested in international ophthalmology? Have you always wanted to talk to some of the international experts, but find it hard to connect? Are you interested in learning a variety of ways to be involved in international work?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then the AAO 2019 YO Lounge Power Hour, “Meet with an International Expert,” may have given you some answers. In an informal setting over lunch, attendees were able to chat with international ophthalmology experts who were enthusiastic about their careers.

Participants hopped from table to table to learn about Orbis, leadership and professional development programs in other countries, complex cataract surgery and retinopathy of prematurity in underserved communities around the world.

In an informal setting over lunch, YO attendees were able to chat with multiple enthusiastic international ophthalmology experts. As they hopped from table to table, YOs listened to international experts talk about their experience with ophthalmology around the world and the opportunities available to young ophthalmologists.

The networking event was a great opportunity for YO international ophthalmology novices and those who have been doing it for a while to meet with ophthalmologists in different subspecialties with experiences abroad.

YOs were able to hear exciting stories of how these experts got involved with international collaborations, and more importantly, how YOs can start on the same path. Experts helped YOs tailor international experiences that would be most impactful for other countries and themselves.

Did you miss the event? The YO International Subcommittee has your back. Just reach out to the subcommittee if you are interested in finding out more about getting connected to these experts to start the conversation. It’s never too late to get involved!
