Sustainability was the focus of the cover story in the November 2023 EyeNet Magazine. In her presentation at the "Green Ophthalmology: Our Sustainability Mandate" symposium at AAO 2023, Dr. Ruth Williams, editor of EyeNet, says that the title of the symposium implies that all ophthalmologists have a responsibility to create sustainable eye care. Not only is this a patient health issue, but it is also a business issue, as medical waste is responsible for about 25% of total medical spending costs in the United States according to a 2019 study.
