    Myopia in Genetic Disorders

    AAO 2023
    Pediatric Ophth/Strabismus, Refractive Mgmt/Intervention

When thinking about myopia and its treatment, genetic disorders often get overlooked. The second presentation at the "Understanding Myopia: Global Prevalence, Mechanism, Treatment, and Prevention in 2023" symposium at AAO 2023, given by Dr. Jefferson Doyle, describes the great variety of genetic disorders that can lead to high myopia, and that the mechanisms of myopia development and of the efficacy of therapies are largely unknown. Using a mouse model study on Marfan syndrome as an example, Dr. Doyle describes the importance of future investigations into monogenic myopia-related disorders as well as the value of mice as a model for evaluating potential common etiologies and novel therapies.
