A to Z of Radiotherapy for an Ophthalmologist

    AAO 2023 Video Program
    Ocular Pathology/Oncology, Orbit

Radiotherapy is a therapeutic strategy that impacts the DNA and replicability of cancer cells by use of radiation in the form of high-energy particles or waves, such as x-rays, gamma rays, electron beams or protons. In ocular oncology, apart from surgery, laser, cryotherapy and chemotherapy, radiotherapy has emerged as an effective treatment modality for various tumors of the eyelids, conjunctiva, iris, choroid, retina, optic nerve, orbit and periorbital structures. Complex orbital anatomy and susceptibility to collateral damage makes ophthalmic radiotherapy challenging, necessitating a team approach. This video shall display the aspects of radiotherapy related to the eye, including basics of radiotherapy, evolution in the field of ocular oncology, indications, techniques of eye-shielding, different modalities of radiation, dosimetry, endpoint of a therapy, possible ocular and systemic complications, management, contraindications and current radiotherapy protocols in various ocular tumors.
