Chapter 15: Ocular Involvement in AIDS
External Eye Manifestations
Molluscum Contagiosum
Molluscum contagiosum is caused by a DNA virus of the poxvirus family. The characteristic skin lesions show a small elevation with central umbilication. Molluscum contagiosum lesions in immunocompetent individuals are few, unilateral, and involve the eyelids. In patients with AIDS, however, these lesions may be numerous and bilateral. If molluscum contagiosum lesions in patients with AIDS are symptomatic or cause conjunctivitis, surgical excision may be necessary.
