The Preferred Practice Patterns Committee (PPPC)
The PPPC develops guidelines for the pattern of practice, not for the care of a particular individual, based on the best available scientific data.
The PPPC is comprised of six subspecialty panels, the Chair of the Committee, David K. Wallace, MD, MPH, and the Methodologist, David C. Musch, PhD, MPH. FINANCIAL DISCLOSURES - PPPC
Authors and reviewers of PPPs are volunteers and do not receive any financial compensation for their contributions to the documents. The PPPs are developed by the Academy without any external financial support and are externally reviewed by experts and stakeholders before publication.
The Academy complies with the Council of Medical Specialty Societies (CMSS) Code for Interactions with Companies (available at https://cmss.org/code-signers-pdf/) in developing PPPs by following the Preferred Practice Patterns and Ophthalmology Technology Assessments: New Relationship with Industry Procedures.

The Academy was a leader in developing clinical practice guidelines, with the first Preferred Practice Pattern (Comprehensive Adult Eye Examination) approved by the Board of Trustees in October 1988. The first disease-oriented PPPs followed in 1989. In this session, leaders of the process over the last 20 years discuss their experiences and thoughts on the value of PPPs, how the process has changed over two decades, and why.
