    Applications for 2021 MIPS Hardship Exceptions Open

    The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has opened hardship exception applications for the Merit-Based Incentive Payment System for 2021.

    You can file two types of hardship exception applications: one for the MIPS promoting interoperability category hardship exception and for the MIPS extreme and uncontrollable circumstances hardship exception. The deadline to apply for both types of hardship exceptions is 8 p.m. ET on Dec. 31.

    If you have been affected by an extreme and uncontrollable circumstance, including the COVID-19 pandemic, you can apply for the hardship exception. Make sure you email the IRIS Registry at irisregistry@aao.org if you file an application.
