In this interview from AAO 2017, Dr. Elizabeth Yeu discusses the advantages of extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOLs. First approved in July 2016, EDOF IOLs employ a new technology to improve the range of vision without splitting light rays. This permits a full range of continuous high-quality vision after cataract surgery, improving intermediate and near vision while maintaining comparable distance visual acuity. Dr. Yeu finds that patient selection is critical when deciding whether to use an EDOF or multifocal IOL, and offers advice on how to make this decision. She also recommends using the same family of lenses in both eyes.
