Veteran health care administrator to lead new data science division for global organization of eye physicians and surgeons

SAN FRANCISCO – Sept. 16, 2015 – The American Academy of Ophthalmology today announced the promotion of Flora Lum, M.D., to Vice President of Quality and Data Science.

Dr. Lum will lead the organization’s newly created quality and data science division. She oversees a team that is primarily charged with the ongoing management of the Academy’s IRIS® Registry.

Under her guidance, the ophthalmology clinical data registry that enables ophthalmologists to benchmark performance and improve quality of care is now used by more than 10,000 physicians across the country. The IRIS Registry is one of the largest and fastest-growing clinical registries among those dedicated to a single medical specialty.

“Dr. Lum has extensive knowledge and experience in clinical benchmarking through big-data analytics,” said David W. Parke II, M.D., CEO of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. “This expertise will be invaluable as the Academy continues its focus on harnessing the power of information technology to drive medical discovery and improve patient care.”

During the past 11 years, Dr. Lum had led the Academy’s quality of care and knowledge-base development initiatives. She oversaw the Academy’s care improvement programs and led teams responsible for clinical guidance, public health and data analytics initiatives. Those efforts will continue as a dedicated division within the Academy.
