    Diabetic Retinopathy Screening for Children with Type 1 Diabetes Should Start at Later Stage, New Study Says

    SAN FRANCISCO – A new study has found that the occurrence of advanced forms of a diabetic eye disease remains low among children living with diabetes, regardless of how long they have had the disease or their ability to keep blood sugar levels controlled. Researchers are therefore recommending that most children with type 1 diabetes delay annual diabetic retinopathy screenings until age 15, or 5 years after their diabetes diagnosis, whichever occurs later. Their findings were published online today in Ophthalmology, the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

    “Bionic Eye” Three-Year Clinical Trial Results Prove Long-Term Safety, Efficacy of Implant that Restores Vision in the Blind

    SAN FRANCISCO – The three-year clinical trial results of the retinal implant popularly known as the “bionic eye,” have proven the long-term efficacy, safety and reliability of the device that restores vision in those blinded by a rare, degenerative eye disease. The findings show that the Argus II significantly improves visual function and quality of life for people blinded by retinitis pigmentosa. They are being published online today in Ophthalmology, the journal of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
    American Academy of Ophthalmology Urges Use of Protective Eyewear When Using Consumer Fireworks This Fourth of July

    SAN FRANCISCO – Nearly 1 in 3 people in the United States have been injured by fireworks or know someone who has been injured by fireworks, according to the 2015 Fireworks Safety Survey from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Thousands each year suffer fireworks eye injuries. To help reduce the amount of potentially blinding injuries from devices such as roman candles, bottlerockets and firecrackers, the American Academy of Ophthalmology is offering tips for safe celebrations and releasing a new animated public service announcement to help educate children about the dangers of playing with fireworks.
    When is the Right Time to Have Cataract Surgery?

    SAN FRANCISCO – Nearly 25.7 million Americans over age 40 have cataracts and the number is projected to increase to 45.6 million by 2050. While the only way to remove cataracts – a clouding of the eye’s lens – is surgery, the right time to have surgery depends on the individual patient. In support of Cataract Awareness Month, the American Academy of Ophthalmology is offering tips for those who have been diagnosed with cataracts as they consider whether to have surgery to remove them and when.
    Ophthalmologists Say Medicare Physician Payment Data Needs More Clarity to Benefit the Public

    SAN FRANCISCO – The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services today released to the public data relating to 2013 Medicare payments made to physicians and other providers. In response, the American Academy of Ophthalmology is providing necessary context for the reimbursement data, which in its raw form are often complex and difficult to understand. The Academy, which represents the majority of eye physicians and surgeons within the United States, is offering information about significant factors regarding how ophthalmologists are reimbursed for services in an effort to render the data more meaningful for public use.

    How to Choose the Best Sunglasses: Six Things to Consider

    SAN FRANCISCO – Everyone knows sunglasses make it easier to see on a sunny day, whether out on the road or the water. However, wearing the right sunglasses is also the best defense for keeping ultraviolet (UV) rays from causing short- and long-term eye damage, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the world’s largest association of eye physicians and surgeons.
