Ophthalmologists should be knowledgeable and comfortable with both procedures and be familiar with the indications, contraindications, advantages, and drawbacks of each so they can provide the best service to patients. It’s OK to have a preference, but beware of becoming the one-trick surgeon. However, if faced with having to master a single operation that is performed infrequently, enucleation should be the favored choice.
