Enucleation or evisceration: Which is better? It’s a false choice; each has its place, says Dr. Robert Mazzoli in his 2013 Oculofacial Plastic Surgery Subspecialty Day presentation. Ophthalmologists should be knowledgeable and comfortable with both procedures and be familiar with the indications, contraindications, advantages, and drawbacks of each so they can provide the best service to patients. It’s OK to have a preference, but beware of becoming the one-trick surgeon. However, if faced with having to master a single operation that is performed infrequently, enucleation should be the favored choice.
