    Chemical Burns

    AAO 2015

Ocular chemical injuries cause blindness, and early treatment is critical:

    • Irrigate until pH is normal (borate buffer preferred).
    • Identify the offending agent.
    • Remove particulate matter if pH fails to normalize.
    • Evaluate and quantify ocular surface damage.
    • Consider surgery for necrosis.
    • Treat inflammation and elevated IOP aggressively.
    • Prevent corneal scarring and keratolysis.

The role of contact lens and/or amnion remains controversial.
