Chemical Burns
AAO 2015
Ocular chemical injuries cause blindness, and early treatment is critical:
- Irrigate until pH is normal (borate buffer preferred).
- Identify the offending agent.
- Remove particulate matter if pH fails to normalize.
- Evaluate and quantify ocular surface damage.
- Consider surgery for necrosis.
- Treat inflammation and elevated IOP aggressively.
- Prevent corneal scarring and keratolysis.
The role of contact lens and/or amnion remains controversial.
