Risk assessment is a relatively new concept for glaucoma care, but studies have allowed the development of risk calculators to aid in treatment. With this emerging evidence, we are starting to calculate the likelihood of progressive visual loss from glaucoma. Risk factors that have long been discussed are now quantified in study populations. Validated risk calculators have been published and tools are available on line. By understanding and applying the concepts of risk assessment, we can better identify those patients at greater risk who may benefit most from earlier or more aggressive intervention. These tools can also help us treat asymptomatic chronic disease.
