In her presentation at the AAO 2023 symposium on "Green Ophthalmology: Our Sustainability Mandate, Dr. Emily Schehlein discusses how industry and organized medicine can collaborate in engagement strategies to reduce ophthalmic waste and promote sustainability efforts. Regulations and a lack of knowledge and/or motivation often act as barriers to sustainability in industry, but industry is also leading the way with initiatives such as reducing waste in phaco packs, moving from paper to electronic Instructions for Use, and refurbishing obsolete units.
