    Vision Rehabilitation for Advanced AMD

    By Mary Lou Jackson, MD
    Subspecialty Day 2011: Retina
    Comprehensive Ophthalmology, Retina/Vitreous

Despite advances in treatment for age-related macular degeneration (AMD), many adults live with loss of central vision that impacts activities such as reading and driving, as well as their safety and psychosocial well-being. Modern imaging of scotomas and habitual fixation has helped clinicians understand how patients compensate for their vision loss and how a rehabilitation plan can assist them. Dr. Mary Lou Jackson shares two patient cases that illustrate how comprehensive vision rehabilitation extends beyond simple magnification, and why ophthalmologists are uniquely positioned to ensure patients gain access to low-vision care.
