9 Uveitis and Ocular Inflammation
Chapter 9: Posterior Uveitis and Panuveitis
Highlights
-
Posterior uveitis is inflammation that involves primarily the retina and/or choroid.
-
Panuveitis is inflammation that involves all anatomical components of the eye—anterior chamber, vitreous, retina, and/or choroid.
-
Posterior uveitis and panuveitis may be associated with systemic infection or autoimmune disease, which can be diagnosed by history and physical examination, review of systems, and focused workup.
-
Initial treatment of noninfectious posterior uveitis and panuveitis typically involves systemic and/or local corticosteroids. Systemic immunomodulatory therapy may be beneficial for patients who are intolerant of corticosteroids, require high doses of corticosteroids to control their disease, or require long-term treatment.
