Chapter 1: Introduction to Glaucoma: Terminology, Epidemiology, and Genetics
Genetics
Genome-Wide Association Studies
The more common adult-onset forms of glaucoma are generally associated with complex genetic inheritance patterns. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have been used to identify many genetic loci associated with POAG, 8 with PACG, and 2 with pseudoexfoliation syndrome. GWAS have also led to the discovery of genetic risk alleles for IOP and certain glaucomatous optic nerve features.
