Combining Lenses
If 2 (thin) lenses—say, of powers P1 and P2—are placed in contact immediately adjacent to one another, and we consider them together as a single compound lens system, the power of the 2 lenses taken together is given, to an excellent approximation, by the sum of the powers of the constituent lenses: P = P1 + P2. This summation is the utility of the reciprocal description of lens power.
