Diabetes Mellitus and Hypertension
As mentioned earlier, hypertensive patients with diabetes mellitus usually require 2 or more antihypertensive drugs to achieve a BP goal of less than 130/80 mm Hg. Chlorthalidone (the preferred thiazide diuretic), β-blockers, ACE inhibitors, ARBs, and CCBs reduce cardiovascular complications in these patients. ACE inhibitors or ARBs are beneficial for those with diabetic nephropathy.
