  • Dr. Custer is a Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended both college and medical school at Vanderbilt University before his residency at Washington University. After completing a fellowship in ophthalmic plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, he returned to St. Louis in 1984.

    Dr. Custer’s practice is limited to oculofacial surgery. He has been regularly listed among the “Best Doctors in America” and has received the Washington University “Academic Teacher of the Year Award” on several occasions. He is both a national and international lecturer, participating in numerous meetings and visiting professorships. He has published over 60 scientific papers. Areas of interest include enucleation, orbital trauma, and lacrimal surgery. He has been a reviewer for multiple journals and is on the editorial board for Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

    Dr. Custer has been active in a number of national organizations, holding committee posts at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS), and the American Board of Ophthalmology (ABO).
