This prospective cohort study compared the performance of 2 trifocal IOLs: the hydrophobic AcrySof PanOptix (Alcon) and the hydrophilic AT LISA tri 839MP (Zeiss).
Study design
The cohort comprised 119 eyes undergoing bilateral cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange. Sixty-one patients received the PanOptix IOL while 58 received the AT LISA tri 839 MP. Intermediate vision was measured at 80 cm and 60 cm and near at 40 cm. Patients were also surveyed on the frequency of dysphotopsias as well as spectacle use.
Outcomes
Postoperatively, corrected near (CNVA) and intermediate (CIVA) vision were similar between the two groups. At 60 cm, CNVA was significantly better in the PanOptix group, but the AT LISA outperformed the PanOptix at 80 cm.
Halos were significantly more likely to be reported as milder or not bothersome at all in the PanOptix group (P=0.04). The PanOptix group was significantly more likely to report never using glasses for intermediate vision (P=0.016) and had a lower rate of posterior capsular opacification.
Limitations
Both groups were limited by a small number of patients. The mean age was young for both populations (60.6 years), presumably because of the inclusion of refractive lens exchange patients. The follow up was limited to 6 months.
Clinical significance
This study helps with counseling U.S. patients receiving the PanOptix on what "intermediate" vision means with this IOL. A focal point of approximately 2 feet works well for a laptop but would be a little close for a desktop.
