27-Gauge Retinectomy Under Silicone Oil
Scissors Delamination
By Steve Charles, MD
Retina/Vitreous
Dr. Steve Charles demonstrates his scissors delamination technique using curved scissors in a case of diabetic traction retinal detachment. Curved scissors are ideal for both segmentation and delamination. Dr. Charles first removes all anterior and posterior vitreous traction, and then identifies areas where it is easiest to segment without coming into contact with the retinal surface. He dubs this approach "access" segmentation, followed by "inside-out" delamination. The technique obviates the need for viscodissection, bimanual surgery, chandelier lighting, or perfluoro-n-octane (PFO).
