    The promotion of Rohit Varma, MD, MPH, is effective immediately. Dr. Varma has been interim dean of the Keck School of Medicine of USC since March. Dr. Varma will also hold the May S. and John Hooval Dean’s Chair in medicine.

    Dr. Varma is a recognized leader in the epidemiology of eye diseases, and an expert on changes in the optic nerve in glaucoma. He is currently investigating new imaging techniques in the early diagnosis of glaucomatous optic nerve damage. Previously, he served as principal investigator of the Los Angeles Latino Eye Study, the Chinese American Eye Study, the Multi-Ethnic Pediatric Eye Diseases Study and the African American Eye Disease Study. He is also working to develop novel implantable devices for IOP measurement and drainage.

    He previously served as the chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, director of the USC Gayle and Edward Roski Eye Institute and president of the USC Care Medical Group.
