    Carl Zeiss Meditec has named James V. Mazzo Global President of Ophthalmology for its new Strategic Business Unit Ophthalmology division, a consolidation of its diagnostic and surgical products.

    In a joint statement, Dr. Ludwin Monz, president & CEO, and Dr. Michael Kaschke, chairman of the Supervisory Board, said:

    “We are excited to have Mr. Mazzo, one of the best experts in the ophthalmology industry, join the Zeiss family. The re-organization and new leadership of the ophthalmology business will allow Carl Zeiss Meditec to extend the offering for ophthalmology and optometric customers globally. We see particular opportunities in extending the business in North America and parts of Asia.”

    Mazzo has more than 35 years of ophthalmic business experience, leading companies such as Allergan, Abbott Medical Optics, AcuFocus and Neurotech.

    In a separate press release, AcuFocus announced Alan Waterhouse has been appointed president and chief operating officer and William Link, PhD, has been named chairman of the board to replace Mazzo as chairman and CEO, effective Aug. 1.
