In this interview from AAO 2016, Dr. Jennifer Rose-Nussbaumer discusses the Mycotic Ulcer Treatment Trial (MUTT) II published in October. After MUTT I found that topical natamycin was significantly more effective than voriconazole for treating filamentous fungal ulcers, investigators launched the placebo-controlled MUTT II trial to determine if there is a benefit to adding oral voriconazole to topical natamycin for the treatment of severe ulcers. The trial found no added benefit. Dr. Rose-Nussbaumer offers her insight into possible reasons for these findings, and suggests that the choice of anti-fungal treatment may ultimately depend on its type, severity and cost.
