In this interview from AAO 2017, Dr. Anat Galor offers an update on new tests for dry eye disease. She stresses that dry eye is an umbrella term for various conditions such as aqueous deficiencies as well as evaporative, nerve and anatomic problems. Because of the complexity of dry eye disease, tests are unlikely to provide physicians with a “yes” or “no” answer. However, it can be useful in subtyping dry eye, she says. Some of the tests she discusses are the matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) test InflammaDry (Rapid Pathogen Screening), the TearLab Discovery platform for quantifying osmolarity and MMP-9 (TearLab) and the Sjö kit for early detection of Sjögren’s syndrome (Nicox).
