In this interview from AAO 2020 Virtual, Dr. Sam Garg describes a novel fluid-filled curvature-changing IOL. A nonlight splitting, dual-optic lens from LensGen, the Juvene lens has a base lens that fills the capsular bag and a fluid-filled lens that changes curvature to provide a range of vision. Twelve months after implantation in pilot eyes, the novel lens led to mesopic contrast sensitivity curves that appeared similar with and without a glare source compared with a Tecnis monofocal lens. Patients with the Juvene lens also did very well in low-light situations and reported low rates of dysphotopsia. LensGen is currently working with the FDA to finalize the requirements for a phase 1 pilot study in the United States.
