The Academy has been informing and educating members and their practices about ways to reduce waste and improve sustainability. And in 2022, the European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons produced a video to try to raise awareness about the issue:
We are sponsored seven research grants to young ophthalmologist U.S. Academy members at $1,000 each. The purpose is to make ophthalmology more sustainable. Selection criteria include the impact on sustainability and reducing carbon footprint, feasibility for application to ophthalmic practice, operating room or both, and uniqueness of approach. The grant recipients include: Stephanie Chen, MD, Alexander Dillon, MD, Kendall Goodyear, MD, Sitara Hirji, MD, Mahsaw Mansoor, MD, Lucy Mudie, MD, and Annie Wu, MD.
