Therapies for Ocular Genetic Disorders

In this 1-Minute Video, Dr. Arlene Drack discusses therapies for ocular genetic disorders. Congenital nystagmus, reduced night vision or decreased BCVA are clues for inherited eye disorders. She suggests genetic testing if the electroretinogram is abnormal, but recommends working with a genetic counselor or a genetic eye disease service, because the results can be hard to interpret. Patients with RPE65-related disease may benefit from Luxturna whereas individuals with other conditions may be able to find a clinical trial for their condition. It is important to tell patients that there is a lot of ongoing research for inherited retinal disorders and that more treatments will be available with time.
